It is partly due to my graduation from the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, however, I also teach (Brown University from 1970 to 1975) and observed the liberal arts curriculum in person (Brown University) In my opinion, it is important to integrate education and studying art and different subjects. This is not a surprise since the ethnomusicologist, who holds a doctorate and an MA from UCLA is enthusiastic about the arts. My ethnomusicology program, which was started from UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is comfortably located in the department of music in a College of Letters and Science. I am a fan of pursuing multiple passions and seeing the big picture. I very much enjoy teaching students in the undergraduate level (majors and non-majors) for whom I have written three books - Music in India the Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically and Music in Japan: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture) as well as graduate students. Then I will alternate between periods of primarily academic activities and periods of administrative duties (I was Chair of the Department of Music from 1983 to 1988, Dean of undergraduate Advising in 1992-98 and Chair of College of Letters and Science Deans from 1994 to 1998; Chair of Group of Asian Studies from 1999, and am now back as Chair of the Department of Music).
